Consciously Creating

Good things. Better choices.

We believe the things you bring into your life should be well designed, properly made and around for more than five minutes.

That doesn’t mean pretending we’re perfect. Making products has an impact, and we’d rather be honest about that than cover the page in green leaves and sweeping promises. What we can do is make thoughtful choices about what we produce, how much we produce and who we work with.

So that’s what we do.

Made closer to home

Wherever we can, we work with small businesses, independent makers and skilled people close to HIGGS HQ in Devon.

Some of our products are embroidered just ten miles from the barn, while others are made in small workshops around the UK. It gives us a closer relationship with the people making our things, supports brilliant independent businesses and avoids sending products on an unnecessary tour of the country.

Not everything can be made locally, but when it can, it matters to us.

Small batches, for good reason

HIGGS isn’t built around producing enormous quantities of things and hoping somebody buys them.

We make in small batches, which allows us to pay attention to the details, respond to what people genuinely want and reduce the risk of unwanted stock going to waste.

It does occasionally mean something sells out. We think that’s better than making too much.

Materials with more thought behind them

We choose recycled, organic and deadstock materials where they make sense for the product.

That includes organic cotton in our clothing, recycled fibres in selected accessories and existing deadstock fabrics that deserve to become something useful rather than remain forgotten on a shelf.

We don’t choose a material simply because it sounds good on a label. It still has to feel good, work properly and stand up to real life—including muddy walks, long days out and repeated trips through the washing machine.

Leather, chosen carefully

Where we use leather, it is responsibly sourced as a by-product of the food industry.

It allows an existing material to be used rather than wasted, while helping us create products designed to last.

Less unnecessary plastic

We avoid unnecessary plastic in our products and packaging wherever possible, choosing recyclable or lower-impact alternatives instead.

We’re always looking at where materials can be reduced, replaced or used more intelligently. It isn’t a finished job, but it is part of every product decision we make.

Designed to stay

Perhaps the most responsible product is the one you don’t need to replace next season.

We make colourful, useful things intended to be worn, carried, washed, loved and used again and again. Things that earn their place in your wardrobe, your hallway—or the slightly chaotic cupboard containing all the dog’s belongings.

Good design shouldn’t be disposable.

Independently recognised

In 2022, when HIGGS was still known as The Distinguished Dog Company, we received Ethical Accreditation from The Good Shopping Guide in recognition of our environmental and ethical practices.

You can read more about our accreditation here.

Still learning. Still improving.

We won’t claim to have every answer, and we won’t pretend that buying something will save the planet.

We will keep asking better questions, choosing carefully and making things we believe are worthy of the materials, time and people that go into them.

No halos. No grand claims. Just good-quality things and better choices wherever we can make them.
